The Old Stick Shed.

In the heart of the wheat lands in Western Victoria
there is a giant stick shed.

Gi-normous!
260 metres long, 60 metres wide and 19 m high.
The roof is designed to be the same angle at which wheat lies.
It could hold 100,000 tons of wheat.

It's very old, built in the early 1940's to store grain in massive quantities during the second world war when exporting was impossible.

Now it is encased in wire to prevent the roof sheets blowing off.

Like a big wire sarcophagus.

Surrounded by a ring of cracked mud, even though it is winter.

Entry

Is via a long tunnel filled with dust motes.

Leading into this expanse.

Towering poles.

Reaching high.

How amazing is that!

All photos taken by me.

You can read more about it here.

  1. Fantastic photos Deb. And I do believe that's the first time I've read the word sarcophagus on a blog! Love it :)

  3. Great Shots Mrs M. I've never been in it!
Don't need to now. And they might be "mite's"
Motes may be the juvenile stage, not sure, have to check with a bug man.

i am actually going to post in the future on something like that building- sort of.. today was a beautiful fall day in sydney and i realized how many of the buildings and daily sights i saw on the walk to work that inspired me. i plan to post pictures soon

  9. Wow, what an incredible building. Can you imagine being there all on your own? In the dark? I think I'd feel a bit scared. :-(

But what an incredible piece of history!

  14. What an amazing piece of Australian history. And so massive. I hope they find a suitable reuse for the building so that it can stay put. xx
